Here We Go Again...Will Blackface Ever be Okay?

Generally I like Ms. Jablonski. But recent reports of her being made up in blackface for french publication Numero Magazine have me a little jilted. I wrote an article on the topic last semester, so my views have already been aired, but what do you think? Is blackface acceptable as a means of artistic expression? Or is it never okay?

i had a bit of a dilemma when i came across this editorial. though i loved the photographs and appreciated their artistic nature, my socialization of 'body shame' as it were, made me think twice about whether or not this editorial was crossing the line. the image are hardly obscene. i'm not contesting that. but i have always had a case by case attitude towards whether or not nudity in an image is warranted due to artistic merit, or simply a device through which its audience can be shocked or offended. as a result, i posted the only the picture that i thought would sufficiently relay the artistry intended without offending more... conservative observers.

i'm hardly offended by these pictures, but i'm worried that some readers may be. people's views on nudity vary by religion, upbringing and personal preference, so naturally i was a little hesitant. even though nudity is not new to this blog, other editorials usually included partial nudity or some kind of mitigating factor. (i'm not even sure i know what that means). personally i think the issue of the obscenity of nudity in art is a case by case determination, but others may not be so open to the idea.

what do you think? when does nudity cross the line from artistic to obscene, or becomes just plain unnecessary?

Photo of the Day: A Little of This and That

i love this picture. i reminds me of teapots and alice in wonderland. it harkens to my childhood. harken. i like that word.

Photographic Clichés

I read an article recently that gave a list of all the things that photographers need to stop taking pictures of. One of the first ones was sunsets. I laughed, because I really am like a crack addict when it come to a sunset and a camera. But I took these a few weeks before I read the article and i've been meaning to post them for a while. they're not particularly spectacular or anything, and they're not processed because i haven't been feeling well and i couldn't be bothered. but i just like them. (crack addict and all of that). but what do you think? are you sick of seeing pictures of sunsets and puppies and flowers and tiny tiny ladybugs? would you rather see something more provocative and interesting?
